The Science of Addiction: How Substance Use Hijacks the Brain

For generations, people believed addiction was simply a matter of willpower. If someone continued drinking despite losing their health, relationships, career, or faith, the assumption was often that they simply did not want to stop badly enough. Others viewed addiction primarily as a moral failure or a lack of character.

Today, we know much more.

Over the past three decades, advances in addiction science have transformed our understanding of what happens inside the brain when someone repeatedly uses alcohol or other addictive substances. Brain imaging allows researchers to observe measurable changes in brain activity. Genetic studies have identified inherited vulnerabilities that make some people more susceptible than others. Neuroscience has shown that repeated substance use can change the very brain systems responsible for motivation, decision-making, stress, and self-control.¹

These discoveries do not remove personal responsibility, nor do they excuse destructive choices. Instead, they help explain why breaking free can become so incredibly difficult. More importantly, they offer hope. The brain is remarkably adaptable, and addiction research continues to demonstrate that many of the changes caused by alcohol and other substances can improve when drinking stops and the brain is given time and the right conditions to heal.²

For me, this is where science becomes exciting.

Every new discovery reminds me that we are learning more about the incredible brain God designed. Neuroscience is not replacing Scripture. It is helping us better understand the handiwork of our Creator. The more researchers uncover about the brain, the more amazed I become at its complexity, its adaptability, and its remarkable capacity for renewal.

This understanding has transformed the way I approach healing from addiction. Rather than asking, “What is wrong with this person?” we begin asking, “What has this substance been doing to this person’s brain, and how can healing begin?” That shift changes everything. It replaces shame with understanding, condemnation with compassion, and hopelessness with genuine hope.

Throughout this article, we will explore what modern addiction science has uncovered about how addictive substances hijack the brain. We will look at why some people are more vulnerable than others, how substances change the brain’s reward system, the biology of addiction at the cycle level, how stress and trauma influence risk, the progression from casual use to chronic addiction, what evidence-based treatment actually looks like, and how these discoveries beautifully complement what Scripture has taught all along about renewing the mind and finding freedom through Christ.

A Brief History of Addiction Science

For most of human history, addiction was viewed almost entirely through moral, spiritual, or legal lenses. People often believed that those who drank excessively simply lacked discipline or self-control. While personal responsibility certainly plays an important role, this explanation left many difficult questions unanswered. Why could one person stop drinking after a single glass while another found themselves unable to stop despite devastating consequences? Why did people who desperately wanted to stop find themselves drinking again?

In the late eighteenth century, physician Benjamin Rush became one of the first Americans to suggest that habitual drunkenness should be viewed as a disease rather than merely a moral failing. His ideas were controversial at the time, but they planted the seeds for a new way of thinking.

Throughout much of the twentieth century, physicians and treatment professionals continued shifting toward a medical understanding of alcoholism and drug addiction. Those early disease concepts helped reduce stigma by recognizing that addiction involved more than a lack of willpower. However, they were developed long before researchers could observe the living brain.

The greatest breakthroughs came during the 1990s and early 2000s. Advances in brain imaging suddenly allowed scientists to watch the living brain at work. Instead of guessing what addiction might be doing, they could actually observe changes in the brain’s reward system, memory centers, emotional circuits, and decision-making networks.

Researchers found that addictive substances do far more than temporarily alter mood. Repeated exposure can gradually reshape many of the brain systems that influence behavior, producing measurable changes in both brain structure and function.

Today, addiction is widely recognized as a chronic brain disorder involving complex interactions among biology, environment, life experiences, and personal choices. Understanding these changes does not remove personal responsibility, nor does it suggest that people are permanently broken. Instead, it helps us replace shame with compassion and develop recovery strategies that address both the brain and the person as a whole.

This perspective reflects something Scripture has always taught. Psalm 139:14 tells us we are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” yet we live in a fallen world where the enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). One of his greatest weapons is deception. When we fail to recognize his lies, repeated sinful choices can gradually reshape the way we think, respond, and make future decisions. Before long, what began as a choice can become a pattern, and that pattern can become a form of slavery.

Science helps us understand the mechanisms. Scripture helps us understand the meaning. Together, they give us a fuller picture of both the problem and the hope for healing.

Long before scientists understood neuroplasticity, God revealed that our minds could be renewed. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Today, neuroscience is helping explain one of the ways that renewal takes place.

The Genetic Component: What You Inherit

One of the most common questions people ask is, “Why can some people have a drink occasionally while others lose control?”

The answer is not simple because addiction rarely develops from a single cause. Instead, researchers have found that it is usually the result of several factors working together. Genetics, environment, life experiences, trauma, stress, mental health, age of first use, and repeated exposure to addictive substances all influence a person’s level of risk.

Think of addiction like building a campfire. A single log rarely creates a roaring fire. But when you combine dry wood, kindling, oxygen, and a spark, the fire can quickly grow. Addiction often develops the same way. One risk factor alone may not lead to addiction, but several working together can dramatically increase the likelihood.

Studies involving twins, adopted children, and families consistently show that genetics account for roughly 40 to 60 percent of a person’s vulnerability to addiction.⁴ That does not mean someone is born destined to become addicted. It simply means some people begin life with a greater biological susceptibility than others.

If addiction has affected your parents or grandparents, you may need to approach alcohol and other addictive substances more cautiously than someone without that family history. Understanding this is not about fear. It is about wisdom.

As Christians, we recognize that Scripture speaks about generational patterns. Exodus 34:7 describes iniquity being passed down through generations. While the Bible is not describing genetics in scientific terms, it does acknowledge that patterns can pass from one generation to the next. Today, the neurobiology of addiction helps us understand one of the ways that can happen.

Some Christians from families affected by addiction carry shame about their vulnerability as if it were personal weakness. It is not. It is biology. Recognizing an increased vulnerability is not fatalism. It is wisdom that informs how carefully the vulnerable person approaches alcohol.

The Neurobiology: How Addictive Substances Hijack the Brain

To understand the science of alcohol addiction, we first need to understand something incredible about the brain God designed.

Your brain contains a reward system that exists for a very good reason. It helps you make decisions that support life and well-being. When you eat nourishing food, spend time with people you love, accomplish a meaningful goal, or experience God’s creation, your brain rewards those behaviors by releasing chemicals that reinforce them. In simple terms, your brain says, “That was good. Remember it. Do it again.”

One of the most important chemicals involved in this process is dopamine. Dopamine is often called the brain’s “pleasure chemical,” but that is only partly true. A better way to think about dopamine is as a motivation chemical. It helps your brain determine what deserves your attention and what is worth pursuing again.

This reward processing happens through a specific neural circuit called the mesolimbic dopamine pathway. It connects the ventral tegmental area (VTA), which produces dopamine, to the nucleus accumbens, which processes reward signals, and to the prefrontal cortex, which helps evaluate decisions. This pathway exists for survival — normally activated by food, water, connection, and achievement. All addictive substances — alcohol, opioids, stimulants, nicotine — work through similar neurobiological mechanisms, primarily by hijacking this system with doses and intensity the brain was not designed to handle.

Imagine your brain carrying a yellow highlighter throughout the day. Every meaningful experience receives a little highlight. A warm conversation with a friend. Finishing a difficult project. Playing with your grandchildren. Worshiping at church. Your brain highlights these experiences because they contribute to a healthy, meaningful life.

Addictive substances change that process. Instead of placing a small highlight on the experience, the substance takes out a bright neon marker and says, “This is one of the most important things you have ever experienced.” The amount of dopamine released can be far greater than what most natural rewards produce. The brain interprets this unusually large dopamine surge as evidence that the experience is extremely important. It begins assigning extraordinary importance to the substance, as though obtaining it were critical for survival.

The Reward Pathway Hijacked

Researchers call this process salience — a scientific way of describing what the brain considers important. The more often the substance is used, the more the brain assigns importance to it. Eventually, thoughts about the substance begin to crowd out thoughts about healthier rewards.

This helps explain something many people find confusing. Someone may sincerely love their spouse, children, career, and relationship with God, yet still find themselves thinking constantly about alcohol. Through repeated use, the brain has learned to treat the substance as a top priority, often causing the person to choose it over the very people and values they cherish most.

This is one of addiction’s greatest tragedies. The brain begins assigning greater urgency to obtaining the substance than to protecting the relationships, responsibilities, and even the faith that matter most. The chemistry of addiction helps explain how the brain arrived there. Scripture helps us understand why it is so destructive.

Over time, another change takes place. The brain does not continue responding to the substance with the same dopamine surge forever. The body is designed to keep things in balance. When the substance repeatedly floods the brain with unusually high levels of dopamine, the brain adapts by reducing its responsiveness — downregulating dopamine receptors and lowering the volume.

As a result, the substance no longer produces the same effect it once did, and many of the experiences that once brought joy begin to feel far less rewarding. The person may find themselves relying more and more on the substance just to feel “normal.” This is the neurological explanation for why addicted brains “want” the substance even while no longer “liking” it — and why people continue to drink even when drinking no longer feels good.

Hobbies lose their appeal. Relationships feel less rewarding. Spiritual disciplines become harder to practice and enjoy. Even accomplishments that once brought excitement may seem unfulfilling. The problem is not that life has become less enjoyable. The problem is that the brain has become less responsive to the healthy experiences God designed to bring joy, peace, and fulfillment.

The encouraging news is that this is not the end of the story. One of the most remarkable discoveries in addiction research is that the brain remains adaptable throughout life. Just as repeated drinking strengthened unhealthy pathways, repeated healthy choices can strengthen new ones. As alcohol is removed and healthier patterns are practiced consistently, many people begin experiencing genuine pleasure again in relationships, purpose, worship, service, exercise, and everyday life.

The Three-Stage Cycle of Addiction

Understanding the reward pathway also helps explain why addiction is much more than a series of isolated bad decisions. It becomes a repeating cycle that affects the way the brain responds to substances, stress, and everyday life. Modern addiction science describes this as a three-stage cycle,³ and understanding it helps explain why so many people feel trapped even when they desperately want to be free.

Stage One: Binge or Intoxication

The first stage is the one most people recognize. A person consumes alcohol or another addictive substance and experiences its effects. Dopamine surges through the brain’s reward pathway, reinforcing the experience and telling the brain, “Remember this. This is important.”

At first, drinking may feel like a choice made for enjoyment, celebration, curiosity, or social connection. But as the behavior is repeated, the brain begins assigning greater importance to the substance than God ever intended.

Stage Two: Withdrawal and Negative Affect

Eventually, the effects wear off. Many people think withdrawal always means dramatic physical symptoms, but that is not always the case. For many individuals, especially in the earlier stages, withdrawal is experienced emotionally before it is experienced physically.

The person may feel anxious, irritable, restless, discouraged, emotionally flat, or unable to relax. Life simply does not feel quite right anymore. Ironically, the very substance that temporarily relieved those feelings has also contributed to creating them.

Scientists have found that repeated substance use does not only affect the brain’s reward system. It also disrupts the brain’s stress system. As the brain adapts to repeated exposure, everyday stress can begin to feel more overwhelming, and the desire to return to the substance becomes stronger.

Somewhere along the way, the goal shifted. Using the substance stopped being primarily about pleasure and started becoming about relief.

Stage Three: Preoccupation and Anticipation

The third stage often surprises people because it occurs before the next drink ever happens.

This is the stage of mental obsession. The person begins thinking about the substance. They may begin planning the next opportunity to use, wondering whether they have enough available, negotiating with themselves about how much they will consume, or convincing themselves that “just one more time” will somehow be different.

The brain’s decision-making center, the prefrontal cortex, has become less effective at helping the person weigh long-term consequences against short-term relief. Cravings begin to overpower rational thinking.

This helps explain why people often say, “I could not stop thinking about it.” The next use does not begin when the substance is consumed. It often begins hours earlier in the mind.

As these thoughts continue, they eventually lead back to Stage One, and the cycle repeats. Understanding this cycle should never lead us to hopelessness. It should lead us to wisdom. If addiction is reinforced through repeated cycles, recovery is strengthened through repeated interruptions of those cycles. Every time you recognize a craving, capture a thought, choose a healthier response, or lean into God instead of a substance, you are weakening old pathways and strengthening new ones.

The Role of Stress and Trauma

Genetics are only part of the story. Researchers have also found that chronic stress and unresolved trauma significantly increase the risk of addiction.⁵ Many people who struggle with addictive substances are not just pursuing pleasure. They are trying to escape emotional pain.

For some, that pain began long before the first drink. Childhood abuse, neglect, loss, rejection, anxiety, or prolonged stress can leave lasting effects on the mind, body, and brain. The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study and its follow-ups have reshaped our understanding of why addiction so often has roots far earlier than the first drink. Alcohol or another substance may initially feel like relief, but over time it creates a cycle of dependence that becomes difficult to escape.

Understanding this changes the way we should see people. Instead of asking, “What is wrong with you?” we begin asking, “What happened to you?”

That question does not remove responsibility. It creates compassion. Psalm 147:3 says, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” The order of that verse is significant. Brokenhearted comes first. Healing is what God brings. Addiction often grows in the midst of pain, but God specializes in restoring broken places. Science helps us understand how trauma affects the brain. Scripture reminds us that through God, healing is possible.

The Progression: From Use to Dependence

Three terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe very different things. Understanding the difference helps remove confusion and allows people to recognize warning signs much earlier.

Phase 1: Casual Use

Most adults who drink alcohol stay at this level. Social drinking without significant consequences or preoccupation. Alcohol is present occasionally but does not occupy mental space or create problems.

Phase 2: Problematic Use

Drinking begins to produce consequences — sleep disruption, relationship friction, health effects, increasing tolerance — but is still controllable. The same amount no longer produces the same effect, so a person needs more to achieve what they once experienced with less. This is the window when intervention is most effective.

Phase 3: Dependence

The brain and body have adapted to the presence of the substance. When alcohol is removed, withdrawal symptoms appear because the brain has come to expect it. Cravings intensify. Moderation becomes genuinely difficult or impossible. A person can become physically dependent without meeting the full criteria for addiction, but the line between the two is often thin.

Phase 4: Chronic Addiction

Addiction goes beyond tolerance or dependence. It is characterized by compulsive use despite harmful consequences.⁶ The substance begins interfering with relationships, health, responsibilities, finances, work, and spiritual life, yet the person continues using it because the brain has learned to prioritize obtaining relief over avoiding consequences.

The earlier a person recognizes what is happening, the greater the opportunity to interrupt the cycle before it becomes more firmly established. Left unaddressed, tolerance often leads to greater dependence, and dependence frequently brings increasingly serious consequences.

None of these stages define a person’s identity. Your diagnosis is not your identity. Your past choices are not your identity. Your struggle is not your identity. As followers of Christ, our identity is found in Him. Recovery is not about carrying a label for the rest of your life. It is about allowing God to transform your mind, restore what has been damaged, and help you become the person He created you to be.

Evidence-Based Treatment: What Actually Works

The science of addiction has not only changed our understanding of the problem. It has also changed our understanding of what works in treatment.

The most effective approaches do not rely on a single intervention. They integrate multiple components that address the whole person — body, mind, relationships, and spirit.

Medical care stabilizes the body. For people with physical dependence, medically supervised detox may be necessary before other recovery work can begin. In some cases, medications like naltrexone or acamprosate can help reduce cravings and support early sobriety. These are prescribed by a doctor and are not a replacement for deeper recovery work, but they can provide a critical bridge during the most vulnerable early period.

Therapy addresses the thinking patterns, emotional wounds, and behavioral habits that fuel addiction. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps identify and change distorted thinking. Motivational Interviewing strengthens a person’s own reasons for change. Trauma-informed therapies like EMDR and IFS help process experiences the brain has stored but never resolved.

Community support provides accountability, encouragement, and the knowledge that you are not alone. Recovery groups, small groups, church communities, and accountability partners all serve this function. Research consistently shows that community is one of the most powerful predictors of long-term success.

Lifestyle change strengthens healthy brain function. Sleep, nutrition, exercise, stress management, and daily structure all contribute to the brain’s ability to heal and form new pathways.

Faith-integrated care is not supplemental to these approaches. For people of faith, it is a legitimate and powerful component of treatment. Prayer, Scripture, worship, confession, and reliance on the Holy Spirit address dimensions of the person that clinical care alone cannot reach. The most effective recovery often combines all of these components, allowing science and faith to work together rather than competing for priority.

Where Science and Faith Meet

The science of addiction does not contradict Christian faith. It complements and illuminates it.

Neuroscience reveals the how. Scripture reveals the why. The Holy Spirit provides the power to change. Community sustains the process.

Every new insight into the brain reminds me of the incredible design of our Creator. Science is not competing with God. It is studying what He created. As researchers uncover the remarkable complexity of the human brain, they are revealing the intricate ways God designed us to think, learn, adapt, and heal. Psalm 139:14 — “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” — is true down to the neural level. Acknowledging the “wonderfully made” includes acknowledging how addiction works in the brain He designed.

That is why I believe the most effective approach to recovery addresses the whole person. Medical care stabilizes the body. Counseling identifies unhealthy thinking patterns. Community provides encouragement and accountability. Healthy habits strengthen brain function. And a growing relationship with Jesus Christ transforms the heart and mind and gives lasting purpose to the process.

Proverbs 2:6 says, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” God is not threatened by scientific discovery. He is the Author of truth. Every genuine discovery about the brain gives us another glimpse into the wisdom of His design.
